For years, Siri has been one of Apple’s most recognisable features. It helped introduce millions of people to voice assistants long before artificial intelligence became the dominant force driving the technology industry.
But as rivals such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude transformed expectations around what AI assistants can do, Siri increasingly began to feel like a product from a different era.
That may finally be about to change.
According to reports and leaked renders ahead of Apple’s upcoming WWDC 2026 event, iOS 27 is set to introduce the most significant overhaul in Siri’s history, transforming the assistant from a simple voice-command tool into a fully fledged AI-powered chatbot deeply integrated across the Apple ecosystem.
The centrepiece of the update appears to be an entirely new Siri experience.
According to information shared by Bloomberg and reported by MacRumors, Apple is developing a dedicated Siri app that supports both text and voice conversations, complete with chat history and a chatbot-style interface. Rather than simply responding to commands, Siri would operate much more like modern AI assistants, allowing users to engage in ongoing conversations and switch seamlessly between voice and text interactions.
The redesign also introduces a feature reportedly called “Search or Ask”.
Instead of launching Siri through a full-screen interface, users would be able to swipe down from the top centre of the display to access a Dynamic Island-powered AI assistant. Search results, AI responses and suggested actions would appear in rich information cards, creating a more fluid interaction model that remains accessible throughout the operating system.
The shift represents a major departure from how Siri has traditionally functioned.
For more than a decade, Apple’s assistant largely focused on executing commands, setting reminders, controlling devices and answering basic questions. The new approach suggests Apple is positioning Siri as a true AI platform capable of reasoning, contextual understanding and content generation.
One of the most significant upgrades involves personal context awareness.
Apple first demonstrated elements of this capability during previous Apple Intelligence presentations. The new Siri is expected to understand information stored across messages, emails, calendars and other apps, allowing it to answer more complex personal questions. Users could potentially ask Siri about upcoming appointments, flight information, reservations or other details stored across their devices.
This deeper understanding of personal information is becoming one of the defining battlegrounds in the AI industry.
While public AI models have become increasingly powerful, many technology companies are now focused on creating assistants capable of understanding individual users, their schedules, communications and preferences. Apple’s advantage lies in its tightly integrated ecosystem, giving Siri access to data already stored across iPhones, iPads and Macs.
The leaks also suggest Apple is preparing a more open AI strategy.
While ChatGPT integration already exists within Apple Intelligence, iOS 27 could reportedly introduce support for additional AI models through a new Extensions system. Reports indicate that Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude may become available alongside Apple’s own AI capabilities, giving users greater flexibility when interacting with AI services.
This would represent a significant strategic shift for Apple.
Historically, Apple has preferred tightly controlled software experiences. However, the rapid pace of AI development may be encouraging a more collaborative approach, allowing users access to multiple leading AI systems rather than relying solely on Apple’s own models.
Beyond Siri itself, AI appears to be spreading throughout iOS 27.
The Camera app is expected to receive deeper AI integration, including a dedicated Siri-powered mode that could assist with visual searches and contextual image analysis. Meanwhile, the Photos app is reportedly gaining new generative editing tools, including features called “Extend” and “Reframe”, designed to enhance and modify images using artificial intelligence.
Additional reports suggest Apple is developing AI-powered grammar checking, smarter shortcuts automation and expanded content creation tools. These features would further embed artificial intelligence into everyday workflows across the operating system.
The redesign extends to visual presentation as well.

The new design appears more modern, conversational and focused on text-based interaction, reflecting the broader shift toward chatbot-style experiences that have become standard across the AI industry.
The importance of these changes goes beyond aesthetics.
Apple has faced growing criticism over the pace of its AI rollout compared with competitors such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. While Apple Intelligence introduced several AI features, many observers felt the company remained cautious compared with rivals moving aggressively into generative AI.
